Pro Bono Clients

DLA Phillips Fox regards pro bono legal work as an important aspect of a lawyer's professional responsibility. We support community organisations by providing legal services free of charge.

The firm's target is to provide pro bono legal services with a notional value of at least 3% of the firm's annual revenue. To achieve this our lawyers are each encouraged to undertake 50 hours of pro bono work each year. The projects focus on finding innovative solutions to challenging social problems while helping the most vulnerable members of our society.

Here are some of our pro bono clients:

The Starship Foundation

The Starship Foundation raises funds so that Starship Children’s Health can better care for 150,000 of the sickest children of New Zealand and the Pacific, annually. The Foundation helps put in place new technology, vital research, boosted family support and preventative programmes. Starship Foundation relies upon the generosity and support of the New Zealand public to help make Starship Children’s Hospital a world-class medical facility. DLA Phillips Fox has acted for The Starship Foundation since its inception, and the firm provides regular legal help on a range of issues including all campaigns and sponsorship arrangements. http://www.starship.org.nz/foundation

StarJam

StarJam is a remarkable charitable trust that offers young people with disabilities the chance to perform on stage, regularly. Confidence and character building are the benefits for these youngsters, and for the audience the experience can be life changing. Seeing talented young people on stage performing with passion is a wonderful experience. DLA Phillips Fox is honoured to be a supporter of StarJam. We have fundraised for the organisation and provided legal advice regularly on commercial and fundraising projects. http://www.starjam.org

CanTeen

CanTeen is a charitable organisation designed to support, develop and empower young people who are living with cancer, through a national support network and high quality education. CanTeen aims to ensure that no young person with cancer feels alone. DLA Phillips Fox assists CanTeen with legal and practical advice on promotional campaigns, consumer law, drafting terms and conditions and privacy documentation, reviewing media advertisements and providing a regular ‘go to’ service for all legal queries. In conjunction with our long term client Foodstuffs, DLA Phillips Fox has maintained the support of CanTeen since 1998. http://www.canteen.org.nz

Fred Hollows Foundation NZ

More than 80,000 people in the Pacific are needlessly blind. Yet all it takes in many cases is a 20 minute operation to restore their sight – at a cost of $25. The Fred Hollows Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to eradicating avoidable blindness in the Pacific. Inspired by the late Professor Fred Hollows (world renowned New Zealand eye doctor, humanitarian and social activist), The Foundation works to transfer eye care skills to areas of greatest need. It achieves this by training local doctors and nurses, and supporting them to deliver quality eye care in their own communities (often through the Pacific Eye Institute, in Suva Fiji). Staff and students conduct regular surgical outreach trips to remote areas. DLA Phillips Fox has been involved in a range of projects for the Fred Hollows Foundation. http://www.hollows.org.nz

Community Law Centres

DLA Phillips Fox acts for hundreds of pro bono clients every year, many of whom are referred to us from community legal centres or charitable referral agencies. http://www.communitylaw.org.nz http://www.lawaccess.govt.nz

Bike NZ

BikeNZ is New Zealand’s National Cycling Federation. BikeNZ’s High Performance programme guides New Zealand’s elite cyclists to international success, and also facilitates clubs and events for road, mountain biking, BMX and track riders. BikeNZ also has a programme teaching school children how to ride through the BikeNZ Learn to Ride Programme, and works with the Cycling Advocate’s Network to ensure that cycling is as safe as possible in New Zealand. DLA Phillips Fox has helped in the establishment of these programmes and regularly provides advice. http://www.bikenz.org.nz

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people who help families to be housed appropriately by renovating or building simple, affordable, quality houses. DLA Phillips Fox supports Habitat for Humanity by providing legal services through the Central North Island. http://www.habitat.org.nz

The New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation

The New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation is a charity designed to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of all gynaecological cancers. This is to help women receive treatment from a specialist sooner because early detection can save lives. DLA Phillips Fox has acted for the New Zealand Gynaecological Foundation since its establishment in 2009. http://www.nzgcf.org.nz
